Note to CEO: Train your recruiters how to hide their RACISM
I returned a call to Manpower Recruiter "MD" regarding an application for a fulltime order entry job at a very popular chocolate factory (think school fundraisers) near Midway airport. I live on the northside and wasn't thrilled by the commute but needed a job asap.
I only use my first initial on my resume because ethnic-sounding names don't get callbacks but "L" does. I called the # left on my vm and when "MD" answered I introduced myself by "Ms. (last name)" and explained the reason why I was calling. He asked my first name and I told him.
The phone line immediately went dead (RED FLAG #1). I thought the call dropped and re-dialed the number; two rings and rejected/sent to vm. I thought this must be a job scammer because no reputable recruiter/company would act in such a rude manner. I googled the company #, reviewed my visual vm caller ID.
They were similar so I called the # in my phone & a woman answered/mumbling something like I was calling her house. I asked "Is this Manpower?" She said yes and verified that "MD" did work there and was sitting at his desk. "MD" takes over the call, never once apologizing for clearly hanging up on me 2x or trying to fix it (common courtesy) and call me back (RED FLAG #2). He goes through the motions, asking how my previous job skills relate to the job he's recruiting for.
I have my BA & 21 YRS experience so that was a no-brainer. I reiterated his vm to me, stating they are supposedly holding interviews the next day because the assignment started the following week and I wanted to meet as soon as possible. Even though I'm probably overqualified, "MD" said he would share my information with the client and there was no need to meet. He said the interview would be over the phone and the decision would be made then.
I interjected "you're saying I don't have to meet with YOU/THE AGENCY or THE CLIENT but could be hired over the phone just like that?" (RED FLAG #3). The only time that has happened was the agency was out of state but that wasn't the case. The entire ordeal left me feeling so awkward and insulted. "MD" was so brazen with his blatant disrespect for African-Americans it made me think maybe Manpower doesn't like/hire black people.
It wouldn't be the first time a client told a recruiter "NO minorities or NO women".
I'm not stupid, Chicago (& pretty much everywhere else) can be extremely prejudice towards minorities, women, certain religions, etc. I just didn't expect a employer/company to be so open with their dislike of another ethnicity.
No concern for Manpower employee

Failure to pay employees
After working there for 3 weeks, being told they pay every week, still no pay! They said a check was mailed for the first week.
Then when it wasn't received they said it was going to the paycard that they issue. After week two and still no pay they don't seem to have any answers. They said there was a glitch in the system that it should be there by midnight. Midnight came and went still nothing.
Their next answer was oh it'll be in the next couple of days then.
Once again they came and went and still no pay! So at this point lawyers will become involved!!!!!!!!!

False Information

Time Waster
tl;dr - Maze of broken and byzantine web forms between you and actually applying for your job, and you can't enter the maze until you go to an in-person "interview".
My local office seemed pleasant enough, though perhaps somewhat unprofessional even by my own low standards, but for a very simple job I was asked to sign up to not one but two separate online application sites, both of which demanded I include my past seven years' worth of residency, employment, and education information. The position required a federal background check, which would apparently be compared against one of these two accounts I was to sign up for...what the other one was for, and why the information could not be migrated, I don't know.
I also don't know why this exact information with "NO GAPS", capitalization repeatedly in signup forms, needed to be entered when it was just going to be revealed on the background check I had already agreed on anyways.
Despite signing up through Indeed, and specifically using Indeed's application form rather than an external application form, it was a bait-and-switch - I drove an hour each way to talk to someone, take a short competency test, and have them ask me to sign up for their temp agency, key in all of the information they already had access to via Indeed, and twice at that, essentially doing not just pointless, easily-automated middlework, but also middlework which should have been the duty of the agency, and then return home and see if I ever heard from them again. What's the point of a temp agency, from a job-seeking perspective, if it ends up being more time and work just to "get in the system" of the agency than it would to apply directly?
However, their signup forms were so broken and glitchy that I "timed out" while doing a normal completion and was sent home to try at home. The glitches continued, and no real advice was offered on followup - however, I continued to receive nagging calls and emails from the office about completing my "time-sensitive" application through both of these broken, unnecessary, and unprofessional web forms.
All this, as I finally realized, merely to submit my initial application to the company offering the position.
If anyone reads this, it's probably already too late and you've already let this company waste your time, but if not, be sure not to. I'd advise any other temp agency, or even cold-calling CEOs at random, over applying through Manpower.
Preferred solution: Actually process applicant information like an actual temp company.
Manpower Needs To Teach Its Employees Compassion
Several months ago I had taken some assessments and did very well, and so I was scheduled for an interview with a very good company.
The day of the interview my blood sugar had plummeted so dangerously low that I was put into a deep sleep and ended up not waking up until late that afternoon about three hours after my interview was supposed to have taken place.
When I tried to explain what happened to the manager of your location in Lincoln, Nebraska, I was met with a cold wall of silence and basically banned from ever being placed in a job through Manpower ever again, despite the fact that I had a medical condition that I nearly died from the day I missed my interview.
Your company has a drug policy where if you test positive you can come back six months later and try again, and yet I was banned for missing one interview due to a valid diabetic condition that nearly killed me.
Your managers need to be taught empathy and compassion, because I was treated like a piece of ***
